New Jersey Democratic U.S. Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. Dead At 65

U.S. Democratic House Representative Donald Payne, Jr., Has Died After Suffering A Heart Attack 3 Weeks Ago

Wednesday, April 24, 2024, 2:00 P.M. ET. By George Petruska: Englebrook Independent News,

NEWARK, NJ.- New Jersey Democratic Congressman Donald Payne, Jr. has sadly passed away, nearly three weeks after suffering a massive heart attack that left him in a coma at Newark's Beth Israel Medical Center. Payne was 65-years-old.

Congressman Payne, who was the six-term Democrat and Newark, New Jersey native and representative of New Jersey's 10th Congressional District, which covers areas of Essex, Hudson, and Union Counties since first being elected in a special election following his Father's Death in 2012.

Payne is survived by his wife, Beatrice, and their triplets, Donald, III, Jack, and their sister Yvonne.

Payne's father, Donald Payne, Sr. was a groundbreaker on the New Jersey Political scene. Payne, Sr. was the first black person to be elected to Congress from New Jersey in 1988. Following his death in 2012, Payne, Jr. replaced him after winning a special election to fill the rest of his term.

Payne served on Congress' Homeland Security and Transportation and Infrastructure Committees and numerous Subcommittees, which included Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials. Before becoming a Congressman, Payne served as an Essex County Freeholder and Newark City Councilman.

New Jersey's Governor Phil Murphy issued a statement, saying he and First Lady Tammy Murphy were "deeply saddened."

"With his signature bowtie, big heart, and tenacious spirit, Donald embodied the very best of public service," Murphy said. "As a former union worker and toll collector, he deeply understood the struggles of our working families face, and he fought valiantly to serve their needs, every single day. That purpose was the light that guided him through his early years as Newark City Council President and during his tenure on the Essex County Board of Commissioners. And it guided him still through his more than a decade of service in Congress."

Hudson County Executive Craig Guy issued a statement, saying, "I am deeply saddened by the death of Congressman Donald Payne, Jr. All of Hudson County sends sincere condolences to his wife, Beatrice, and their three children Donald, III, Jack, and Yvonne."

"With a passion and dedication for public service, Donald worked his way up from within county and state offices to win elections for the Essex County Board of Freeholders and Municipal Council of Newark. He then succeeded his father in Congress in 2012 and has since embodied the committed, humble public servant we will strive to represent when we take office. On a personal note, soon after I became County Executive I met Rep. Payne and constituents to bolster efforts to combat escalating gun violence.

Donald was a tireless advocate for voting rights, the pillar of our democracy. In the House of Representatives, he was chosen by his colleagues to lead speeches in favor of expanding voting rights and fighting against voter disenfranchisement efforts, Donald also played a vital role in standing up for minority, and woman-owned businesses in Congress. As Rail Subcommittee Chairman, Donald was a leading voice in guaranteeing minority business participation for federal passenger rail construction projects.

We here in Hudson County continue to admire Congressman Payne's values and work ethic and I thank him for his representation of District 10 in Washington, D.C. My thoughts and prayers are with Beatrice and their children in this difficult time. May he rest in peace."

U.S. House Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr., said he was "anguished and devastated" by Payne's passing.

U.S. House Rep. Andy Kim called his passing "incredibly painful news."

U.S. House Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. noted Payne's fight to raise awareness for diabetes and colorectal cancer prevention, as well as his advocacy for replacing lead pipes in Newark.

"New Jersey has lost a truly great public servant far too soon," Pallone said. "Don affectionately called me 'Uncle Frank' whenever I saw him, because we cherished the strong relationship we forged following the death of his father. We worked together to improve the lives and health of New Jerseyans.

Egg Prices Rise Amid Spike In Bird Flu Outbreaks

Since The Start Of 2024, The U.S. Has Seen A Resurgence Of The Highly Pathogenic Avian Bird Flu

Tuesday, April 23, 2024, 12:00 P.M. ET. By Ryan Metz: Englebrook Independent News,

WASHINGTON, DC.- Egg prices in the U.S. are on the rise again, amid a resurgence of bird flu cases that are continuing to plague the poultry industry across the U.S. According to the St. Louis Fed, the average cost for a dozen eggs has risen to $3.00. Although not as high as the record $4.80 set in January 2023, this is still an increase of $1.00 since eggs reached a low point of $2.00 per dozen in August 2023.

The spike in prices is not the result of inflation, instead, it's the result of over 90 million poultry birds being infected with bird flu, the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, H5N1, since February 2022.

The CDC reports that backyard flocks as well as commercial have been experiencing repeated outbreaks of bird flu throughout 48 states, with only Hawaii and Louisiana not reporting infections. These infections across the country have led poultry farmers to slaughter their entire flocks in an attempt to stop the spread of the disease.

In a January article published by the Associated Press, California chicken farmer Mike Webster reported having to slaughter 550,000 egg-laying chickens to prevent the spread of bird flu in Sonoma County. Slaughters like this across the country have resulted in a shortage of eggs and as a result, higher prices in the grocery stores. "It's a trauma. We're all going through grief as a result of it," said Webster. "Petaluma is known as the Eggbasket of the world. It's devastating to see that egg basket go up in flames."

Over one million birds have been slaughtered throughout Sonoma County alone since the beginning of December 2023.

The CDC has also reported, and they are following closely recent infections in dairy cows, following cows testing positive for H5N1 in 8 states, and as of April 19, 2024, the transmission to two humans. At this time the CDC has rated the risk to humans as low with only one other transmission to a human in 2022, from infected poultry. Reported symptoms have been mild and the first person infected has made a full recovery.

As of today, the CDC continues to respond to the public health challenge posed by the outbreak of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus, or "H5N1 bird flu" in dairy cows and other animals in the U.S. is working with partners including the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

A video from the scene shows members of the group holding "Free Palestine" signs and chanting "From Yale To Columbia, We Will Not Be Moved."

The removal of the Yale Protesters comes just days after New York City Police Officers took 108 anti-Israel protesters into custody at the Columbia University campus on Thursday, April 18, 2024, as Police Officers broke up the encampment at Columbia.

Protests have broken out across college campuses in recent months, as students demonstrate against Israel's offensive in Gaza, following the October 7, 2023, Hamas assault on innocent Israeli Citizens that left 1200 people killed including women and infants, and another 240 Hostages being taken.

As protests continue throughout college campuses across the country, it is becoming evermore apparent that our higher education institutions have become a breeding ground for Antisemitic Hate.

Columbia University Switch To Virtual Classes Amid Protests

Columbia University President Orders Virtual Classes Amid Massive Anti-Israel Protests Take Over University

Monday, April 22, 2024, 8:15 A.M. ET. By Jennifer Hodges: Englebrook Independent News,

MANHATTAN, NY.- Columbia University's President Doctor Nemat "Minouche" Shafik posted in a statement early Monday morning, that she is "deeply saddened" by certain actions of anti-Israel protesters, who have built an encampment on the campus and have harassed students, faculty, and university staff with anti-Israel and pro-Hamas slogans and chants.

Shafik wrote, "I am deeply saddened by what is happening on our campus, our bonds as a community have been severely tested in ways that will take a great deal of time and effort to reaffirm. Students across an array of communities have conveyed fears for their safety and we have announced additional actions we are taking to address security concerns. The decibel of our disagreements has only increased in recent days. These tensions have been exploited and amplified by individuals who are not affiliated with Columbia who have come to campus to pursue their own agendas."

"We need a reset," Shafik added. "To deescalate the rancor and give us all a chance to consider next steps, I am announcing that all classes will be held virtually on Monday. Faculty and staff who can work remotely should do so, and essential personnel should report to work according to university policy. Our preference is that students who do not live on campus will not come to campus."

Shafik then condemned the "Antisemitic Language" chanted by protesters and the "intimidating and harassing behavior on our campus" She offered to those staging the chaos to "sit down and talk" from those who may differ.

"There is a terrible conflict raging in the Middle East with devastating human consequences. I understand that many are experiencing deep moral distress and want Columbia to help alleviate this by taking action. We should be having serious conversations about how Columbia can contribute. There will be many views across our diverse community about how best to do this and that is as it should be. But we cannot have one group dictate terms and attempt to disrupt important milestones like graduation to advance their point of view. Let's sit down and talk and argue and find ways to compromise on solutions," Shafik posted in her overnight statement.

Shafik is also hoping that the school will try to bring this crisis to a resolution in the upcoming days.

Shafik concluded with, "Let's remind ourselves of our common values of honoring learning, mutual respect, and kindness that have been the bedrock of Columbia. I hope everyone can take a deep breath, show compassion, and work together to rebuild the ties that bind us together."

The statement follows after the Orthodox rabbi at Columbia University and Barnard College sent a message to Jewish students encouraging them to leave campus and go home after protesters were caught on camera supporting pro-Hamas terroristic stances and supporting violence against Jewish students.

Visiting Columbia late last week and on Sunday afternoon, I can only say that what has unfolded on the campus of Columbia University is a scathing indictment of what our higher-learning institutions have become. Listening to the chants of protesters comparing and calling Black Police Officers KKK and Jewish students being called Nazis is repulsive, and is a direct consequence of how far repugnant the teaching standards of our universities have transformed student's beliefs.

On Thursday and again yesterday afternoon, I noticed that many of the protesters were people who did not attend the university. I noticed that some of the protesters or should I say organized agitators were people whom we encountered during the Black Friday protest down 34 Street in Manhattan, New York.

Although under The First Amendment of The U.S. Constitution, as Americans you have the right to peaceful protest and too Free Speech. But when protesters align themselves with terrorists screaming "We Are Hamas," then we need to reevaluate what has become of our nation.

As Antisemitic Rhetoric ramps up today at Columbia University, Protests are now being staged at Yale University with Police Officers in Riot Gear making arrests and removing a tent encampment set up by protesters.
