CAMDEN, NJ.- On Friday, April 19, 2024, a Camden County Superior Court Judge sentenced a 21-year-old Camden City man to 55 years in New Jersey State Prison in connection with the shooting death of a 21-year-old Philadelphia man that occurred in Camden, New Jersey in February of 2021.

According to Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay, on January 30, 2024, following a trial in Camden County Superior Court, a jury found Anthony Shields, 21, of Camden, New Jersey guilty on the charges of first degree Felony Murder; first degree Aggravated Manslaughter; and second degree Conspiracy to Commit Robbery, in connection with the fatal shooting of Alex Fernandez, 21, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

On Friday, April 19, 2024, during a brief hearing in Camden County Superior Court, a Superior Court Judge sentenced Shields to a term of 55 years in New Jersey State Prison. The sentence was pursuant to The No Early Release Act which will require Shields to serve 85 percent of his custodial sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

Friday's sentence stems from an incident when on February 4, 2021, members of the Camden County Police Department and the Camden County Prosecutor's Office responded to the 1700 Block of South 7th Street in Camden City on a report of a shooting victim.

Upon arrival, Police Officers found a man, later identified as Alex Fernandez, 21, of Philadelphia unresponsive from multiple gunshot wounds. Mr. Fernandez was immediately transported to Cooper University Hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

A subsequent autopsy performed by the Regional Medical Examiner's Office ruled the cause of Mr. Fernandez's death to be multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death to be homicide.
