Arrest Made In Paterson Shooting Investigation

52-Year-Old Paterson Man Charged With Shooting A Newark Man On April 15, 2024

PATERSON, NJ.- On Monday, April 22, 2024, a 52-year-old Paterson, New Jersey man surrendered to authorities after being charged in connection with an April 15, 2024, shooting that left a 42-year-old Newark, New Jersey man hospitalized.


     According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, on Monday, April 15, 2024, at approximately 10:46 p.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to the area of Godwin Avenue and Carroll Street in the City of Paterson after receiving a 911-Emergency Call reporting shots fired. 



     Upon arrival, Police Officers found evidence of a crime scene. While investigating at the scene, Paterson Police Officers were notified that a 42-year-old Newark, New Jersey man had arrived at Saint Joseph's University Medical Center seeking treatment for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.


     A swift-moving investigation by Passaic County authorities were able to identify Samuel Sparks, 52, of Paterson, New Jersey as the suspect and the individual responsible for the shooting of the Newark man.


     Accordingly, Sparks was formally charged with first degree Attempted Murder; second degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; second degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and second degree Certain Persons not to Possess Weapons.


     After learning of the charges, Sparks surrendered on Monday at the Paterson Police Department. Following being processed on the charges, Sparks was remanded to the Passaic County Jail pending future court proceedings in Passaic County Superior Court.


"The rules of the court requires us to include a statement, that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt."
