Man Charged In Paterson Shooting Investigation

29-Year-Old Paterson Man Charged In Connection With The July 5th Shooting Of a Passaic Man

PATERSON, NJ.- Yesterday, a 29-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and charged in connection with a shooting that occurred in Paterson on July 5, 2024, that hospitalized a 33-year-old Passaic, New Jersey man.


     According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, Jhon Garcia, 29, of Paterson, New Jersey, was formally charged with first-degree Attempted Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; second-degree Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons.



     On Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at around 7:00 a.m., Garcia was arrested without incident by members of the Passaic County Sheriff's Department. Following his apprehension, Sheriff's Officers additionally charged Garcia with third-degree Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance.


     The charges related to the shooting resulted from an investigation that began on July 5, 2024, when, at approximately 5:22 a.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to Saint Joseph's University Medical Center following being notified that a 33-year-old Passaic, New Jersey man had arrived at the Medical Center requesting treatment for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.


     An investigation by Detectives of the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office and the Paterson Police Department's Shooting Investigation Unit were able to determine that the shooting occurred in the area of Park Avenue and East 18th Street in the City of Paterson.


     During the ongoing investigation, Detectives were able to identify Garcia as the suspect and the individual responsible for injuring the man.


     Following being taken into custody, Garcia was processed on the charges and lodged at the Passaic County Jail pending transfer to an area county jail and future court proceedings in Passaic County Superior Court. 


     The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office has filed a motion to have Garcia detained pending trial. If convicted on the charges, Garcia will face up to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison.
