Off-Duty NYPD Police Officer Charged With Shooting A 30-Year-Old Voorhees Man During Road Rage Incident

VOORHEES TOWNSHIP, NJ.- A 27-year-old Yonkers, New York man, who is employed as a New York City Police Officer was taken into custody and charged in connection with a road rage shooting incident that occurred while he was off-duty on Friday, May 17, 2024, in Voorhees Township, New Jersey.
According to Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay, Hieu Tran, 27, of Yonkers, New York, was taken into custody yesterday and charged with first-degree Attempted Murder; second-degree Aggravated Assault; and second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, for the shooting of a 30-year-old Voorhees Township, New Jersey man.
The charges stem from an investigation that began on Friday, May 17, 2024, when just before 11:15 p.m., members of the Voorhees Township Police Department responded to a report of a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 73 and Cooper Road. Upon arrival, Police Officers discovered that one of the drivers had sustained a gunshot wound. The man was immediately transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he still remains in treatment.
During a swift-moving and extensive investigation, Detectives from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the Voorhees Township Police Department utilized area video surveillance footage, cell phone records, and ballistics evidence to identify Tran as the individual responsible for the shooting of the man during an apparent road rage incident.
Ballistics evidence collected from the scene was able to link Tran's New York City Police Department-issued service weapon to the shooting.
Detectives of The Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the New York City Police Department's Internal Affairs Bureau formally placed Tran under arrest on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the New York City Police Department. Tran is currently being detained by the New York Corrections Department pending extradition to New Jersey.
