New Breakthroughs In Graphene Battery Production

Researchers Are Making New Breakthroughs In Cost-Effective Graphene Battery Production

Friday, June 7, 2024, 1:00 P.M. ET. By Ryan Metz: Englebrook Independent News,

MANHATTAN, NY.- In my May 23, 2024, first report, graphene has been shown to have tremendous promise for a variety of applications, from batteries to bioengineering with the list of possibilities to continue to evolve. Graphene, with its ability to hold a large charge with ultra-fast charging capabilities in a small, lightweight package has made it the clear ideal choice in replacing lithium-ion batteries.

The major with graphene has been its production cost. New research, however, may have finally broken through with a way to make high-quality graphene at a low cost.

Currently, graphene is produced in a myriad of different ways with the most common being chemical vapor distillation (CVD). This process involves passing methane gas over a copper plate at a high temperature and a low pressure. Unfortunately, this process sometimes produces graphene of inferior quality.

Researchers have determined that contamination by oxygen was the culprit for the low-quality production. By utilizing a carefully controlled oxygen-free environment, the research team was able to produce quickly without any defects.

Industrial production of graphene using oxygen-free CVD is likely to become a reality in the coming months. Though this method is promising, it should be noted that there have been other "breakthroughs" in graphene production that haven't yet achieved the results needed for widespread, cost-effective commercial use.

Time will tell if oxygen-free CVD truly is the breakthrough it seems to be. I will be closely following the research as new breakthroughs come into play and will keep you updated.
