Man Charged In New Brunswick Pedestrian Hit & Run

31-Year-Old New Brunswick Man Charged With Running Down  Pedestrian Early Monday Morning

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ.- A 31-year-old New Brunswick, New Jersey man was taken into custody and charged in connection in connection with a pedestrian hit and run that occurred early Monday morning in New Brunswick, New Jersey, leaving a man hospitalized. 


     According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone, on Monday, May 20, 2024, just shortly before 1:30 a.m., members of the New Brunswick Police Department responded to the area of 100 Jersey Avenue on a report of a pedestrian hit-and-run. Upon arrival, Police Officers found a 25-year-old New Brunswick man, in the roadway having sustained serious injuries, The man was immediately transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.



     A swift-moving investigation by the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office and the New Brunswick Police Department determined that a motor vehicle being operated by Abel Bustos-Medel, 31, of New Brunswick, New Jersey, struck the man on Jersey Avenue and then fled the scene. 


     A short time later, the sedan was located on Livingston Avenue with damage consistent with striking a pedestrian. Bustos-Medel was immediately taken into custody.


     Accordingly, Bustos-Medel was formally charged with third-degree Assault by Auto; third-degree Leaving the Scene of a Serious Bodily Injury Accident; and Driving Under the Influence.


      The investigation remains active and ongoing.
