Man Arrested In 2020 Beating Death Of Bayonne Woman

MAN RETURNED TO NEW JERSEY AFTER FLEEING TO COLOMBIA IN THE BEATING DEATH OF WOMAN

     "Erick Acosta Was Arrested On Wednesday At Newark Liberty International Airport In Connection With The Murder Of Crystal Ojeda In 2020."

BAYONNE, NJ.- Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez reported, that on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, Members of The United States Marshals Service New York New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force Arrested a 35-Year-Old Former Bayonne, New Jersey man in connection with The Alleged 2020 Brutal Beating Death of Crystal Ojeda, a Mother of Two in Bayonne, New Jersey Public Housing Project.



     Erick Acosta, 35, Formerly of Bayonne, New Jersey was Taken into Custody at Newark Liberty International Airport after being returned from Colombia and was Formally Charged with First Degree Murder; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and Tampering with Evidence. Following being Processed on The Charges, Acosta was Remanded to The Hudson County Correctional Facility pending Future Court Proceedings in Hudson County Superior Court.


     Acosta was First Taken into Custody by Colombian Authorities on October 22, 2022, Pursuant to a U.S. Provisional Arrest Request. On April 10, 2024, Acosta was Extradited from Colombia back to New Jersey.


     According to The Prosecutor's Office, The Arrest and The Charges stem from an investigation, when on October 9, 2020, shortly before 1:00 p.m., Members of The Bayonne Police Department responded to 30 Lord Avenue in The City of Bayonne to perform a Welfare Check. 



     Upon arrival, Police Officers discovered an Unresponsive Woman who had signs of Visible Trauma. The Woman, later identified as Crystal Ojeda, 40, of Bayonne, New Jersey was pronounced deceased a short time later. The Regional Medical Examiner's Office determined the Cause of Death to be Blunt Force Trauma to The Head and Body and The Manner of Death to be Homicide.


     An extensive and exhaustive investigation by Members of The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit and The Bayonne Police Department were able to Identify Acosta as The Suspect and the Individual Responsible for The Death of Ms. Ojeda. Detectives were able to Track and Locate Acosta in Colombia where he was taken into Custody in October of 2022, by Colombian Authorities.
