MAYS LANDING, NJ.- Atlantic County Prosecutor William E. Reynolds reported, that on Thursday, April 25, 2024, an Atlantic County Superior Court Judge sentenced Angelo Williams, 19, of Atlantic City, New Jersey to a three-year term in New Jersey State Prison for second-degree Possession of a Handgun without a permit.

On March 7, 2024, Williams entered into a plea agreement with the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office. In return for the plea, the Prosecutor's Office would recommend a five-year term in State Prison, and would be required to serve a mandatory one-year before becoming eligible for parole.

However, on Thursday during the sentencing hearing, the Honorable Bernard E. DeLury, J.S.C. imposed a lesser sentence of three years in New Jersey State Prison and ordered Williams to serve a mandatory one-year of his custodial term before parole eligibility.

The sentence stems from an incident, when on September 29, 2023, an Atlantic City Police Officer was on patrol, when he received information regarding a man in possession of a handgun, and that the man had the handgun in his waistband. Police Officers responded to 30 North Arkansas Avenue in Atlantic City where the man was seen.

Upon arrival, Police Officers noticed a man matching the description, the man was identified as Williams.

As Police Officers approached Williams, he began to walk away but stopped when Officers told him to. As Officers conducted a frisk, one of the Officers felt the handgrip of a handgun in Williams' waist area. Williams began to bend at the waist to break away from the Officer's control but was quickly taken into custody with the assistance of other Officers.

Upon being taken into custody, the Officer removed the handgun from Williams, which was determined to be a tan and black 9mm handgun that was not labeled or did not have a serial number imprinted on it. The firearm was also equipped with a large-capacity magazine.
