SOUTH CAROLINA MAN SENTENCED TO LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE FOR THE 2018 EDISON GAS STATION ROBBERY MURDER

EDISON, NJ.- Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone reported, that on Monday, March 4, 2024, a Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Sentenced Marcus Wright, 27, of Beaufort, South Carolina to Life in New Jersey State Prison without Parole for the Robbery and Murder of an Edison Speedway Employee that occurred on December 20, 2018.
According to The Prosecutor's Office, on September 12, 2023, a Jury sitting in Middlesex County, New Jersey, returned Guilty Verdicts against Wright on The Charges of Murder; Felony Murder; Armed Robbery; Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery; and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.
Wright's Co-Defendant, Olya Quinnam, 26, also of Beaufort, South Carolina, Pleaded Guilty on September 26, 2019, to One Count of First Degree Robbery. As a Condition of The Plea Agreement, Quinnam agreed to testify against Wright.
On March 4, 2024, during a Hearing, Superior Court Judge Andrea G. Carter, Sentenced Wright to Life in Prison Without Parole for The Charge of First Degree Murder. Wright received concurrent sentences on the remaining Charges of First Degree Felony Murder; Second Degree Conspiracy to Commit Robbery; First Degree Armed Robbery; Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.
During a Two-Week Trial that began on September 5, 2023, Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Lynne Sebrowski and Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Caitlin Lavery presented Evidence and Testimony showing that Wright entered The Speedway Gas Station on December 20, 2018. At that time, he Brandished a Handgun and Demanded Money. The Clerk John Bertram, 38, of The Fords' Section of Woodbridge Township, Handed the Money that was in the Register to Wright, after which, Wright Fired the Handgun, Striking and Killing Mr. Bertram. Quinnam accompanied Wright for The Robbery but Waited Outside as Wright entered the Store.
A Joint Investigation by Members of The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office and Detectives of The Edison Township Police Department determined that Following The Robbery and Murder, Wright and Quinnam Fled The State of New Jersey, to avoid apprehension but were Later Identified as Suspects, and were Taken into Custody in South Carolina on January 3, 2019.
