Garfield Man Charged In Fatal Drug Overdose

29-YEAR-OLD GARFIELD MAN CHARGED WITH SELLING DRUGS THAT CAUSED THE DEATH OF A MAN

     "Melvin Guzman Was Charged Today, With First Degree Strict Liability For A Drug-Induced Death In Connection With A September 2023 Fatal Overdose."

GARFIELD, NJ.- Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella reported, that following an investigation, Today a 29-Year-Old Garfield, New Jersey man was Taken into Custody and Charged in connection with The September 17, 2023, Fatal Overdose of a 30-Year-Old Garfield man.


     The investigation began on September 17, 2023, shortly after 6:30 p.m., Members of The Garfield Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call Reporting the Drug Overdose of Two Individuals. Upon arrival, Police Officers located Two Victims in the area of 249 Lincoln Place in Garfield. 


      Police Officers and First Responders performed Life-Saving Efforts including The Administration of Naloxone. The Victims were immediately transported to a Nearby Hospital Treatment, where one of the Victims, later identified as Ivan Santiago, 30, of Garfield, New Jersey succumbed to a Fentanyl Overdose and was pronounced deceased a short time later.


     A Six-Month Investigation by The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and The Garfield Police Department into Mr. Santiago's Death and Drug Activity determined that Melvin Guzman, 29, of Garfield, New Jersey, was the Individual who Supplied the Fatal Dose of Narcotics that Caused the Death of Mr. Santiago. 


       Accordingly, on Thursday, March 28, 2024, Mr. Guzman was Taken into Custody in Garfield, New Jersey, and Formally Charged with First Degree Strict Liability for a Drug-Induced Death; and Third Degree Distribution of Fentanyl. Guzman was Processed on The Charges and was Remanded to The Bergen County Jail pending Future Court Proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court.
