47-YEAR-OLD MOUNT LAUREL MAN WILL SPEND THE NEXT EIGHT YEARS IN PRISON FOR BIAS INTIMIDATION

MOUNT LAUREL, NJ.- Burlington County Prosecutor LaChia L. Bradshaw reported, that on Friday, December 8, 2023, a 47-Year-Old Former Mount Laurel, New Jersey man was Sentenced to Eight Years in New Jersey State Prison, for a 2021 incident that gained National Attention after an investigation that man Harassed and Used Racial Slurs against Several of his Neighbors.
After originally being Charged in July 2021, Edward C. Mathews, 47 Formerly of Grammercy Way in Mount Laurel Pled Guilty in October 2023, to Four Counts of Fourth Degree Bias Intimidation; and One Count of Second Degree Possession of Controlled Dangerous Substance with the Intent to Distribute.
The Charges that Mathews Pleaded Guilty to involved the Mistreatment of Five Former Neighbors. The Drug Offense was Filed after Mathews was Taken into Custody and a subsequent Search of his Home Uncovered Psilcin Mushrooms inside his home.
The Sentence stems from an incident, when on July 2, 2021, a Neighbor of Mr. Mathews came to The Mount Laurel Police Department to File a Harassment Complaint against Mathews. Shortly thereafter on July 2, a Mount Laurel Police Officer responded to a Coventry Way Residence for a report of a man needing to be removed from the area. Upon arrival, the Police Officer found Mr. Mathews Using Racial Slurs while engaged in a Verbal Altercation with Four Neighbors.
The investigation determined a Pattern of Abuse from Mathews against his Neighbors that included leaving a Threatening Note on one of their vehicles.
"Our office is committed to combatting bias crimes and sending a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated in our community," Prosecutor Bradshaw said. "Nobody should have to endure what these victims experienced."
