PATERSON MAN CHARGED AFTER KILLING ONE AND INJURING ANOTHER AND FLEEING ON FOOT

PATERSON, NJ.- A 62-Year-Old Paterson, New Jersey man was arrested yesterday and charged after Driving at High-Rate of Speed, Swerving Across Double Yellow Lines, and Driving onto the Sidewalk, where he Struck Two People, leaving One Dead and another Seriously Injured then fleeing the scene on foot.
According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at approximately 12:07 p.m., Jose Tremols-Acosta, 62, of Paterson, New Jersey, was observed Driving Erratically at a High Rate of Speed, Swerving back and forth across Double Yellow Lines in the area Broadway and Rosa Parks Boulevard, when he jumped the Curb in his Van and Struck a man and a woman who were walking on the Sidewalk. Following the Collision, Mr. Tremols-Acosta exited his Van and Fled on Foot. Tremols-Acosta was located and Taken into Custody a short time later by Members of The Paterson Police Department.
The Victims include an Unidentified Woman and Joseph Shaw, 83, of Paterson, New Jersey. Both individuals were immediately transported to Saint Joseph's University Medical Center where the woman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. Mr. Shaw remains in the hospital and is currently listed in Critical Condition.
After being Taken into Custody, Mr. Tremols-Acosta was Formally Charged late yesterday with Second Degree Death by Auto; Second Degree Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death; Fourth Degree Aggravated Assault by Auto; and Two Counts of Endangering an Injured Victim.
Mr. Tremols-Acosta was Processed on The Charges and Remanded to The Bergen County Jail pending a First Appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court. The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office intends to File a Pretrial Detention Motion to have Mr. Tremols-Acosta detained pending the outcome of the Charges Filed Against him.
