36-YEAR-OLD BLOOMFIELD MAN CONVICTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE MURDER OF A GAS STATION ATTENDANT

NEWARK, NJ.- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II reported that a Jury sitting in Essex County, New Jersey has Returned Guilty Verdicts against 36-Year-Old Bloomfield, New Jersey man for the Senseless Murder of Jahque Benbow, a 23-Year-Old Attendant at an Irvington Gas Station.
On May 11, 2022, Lamar Sommers, 36, of Bloomfield, New Jersey, along with Two Unidentified Men, Conspired to Shoot Mr. Benbow at The Irvington Gas Station where he worked. Mr. Sommers drove the two men to Irvington, where he dropped them off a block from the gas station. The two men approached Mr. Benbow and Shot him Five Times while Mr. Sommers waited in the car. Mr. Sommers, who fled New Jersey after the Murder, was Apprehended in North Carolina on June 16, 2022.
Following an Eight-Day Trial in Essex County State Superior Court, The Jury deliberated for less than Five Hours before Returning Guilty Verdicts, Convicting Mr. Sommers of First Degree Murder; First Degree Conspiracy to Commit Murder; Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. The Honorable Michael Ravin has Scheduled Sentencing in The Matter for December 4, 2023, when Mr. Sommers will face up to Life in New Jersey State Prison.
