TWO IRVINGTON MEN CHARGED IN THURSDAY NIGHT'S NEWARK SHOOTING DEATH

NEWARK, NJ.- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II reported that Two Irvington, New Jersey men have been Arrested and Charged in connection with The Fatal Shooting of Romulo Luzuriaga that occurred last Thursday Night in Newark, New Jersey.
On Thursday, May 11, 2023, at approximately 10:25 p.m., Members of The Newark Police Department responded to The 200 Block of Grafton Avenue in Newark on a report of a Shooting. Upon arrival, Police Officers found Romulo Luzuriaga, 57, of Newark, in a car, suffering from an apparent Gunshot Wound. Mr. Luzuriaga was immediately transported to University Hospital where he succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased.
A swift-moving investigation by Members of The Essex County Homicide Task Force identified a Motor Vehicle that was involved in the Shooting. On Friday, May 12, 2023, Newark Police Department Patrol Units observed the Vehicle, and a Pursuit Ensued. The Driver Deontee Jones, 24, of Irvington, Fled the Vehicle and was Apprehended by Police Officers a Short Time Later.
Accordingly, Mr. Jones was taken into Custody and Charged with One Count of First Degree Murder; First Degree Felony Murder; First Degree Conspiracy to Commit Murder; Two Counts of Robbery; One Count of Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and Four Counts of Eluding Police.
In addition, Mr. Jones was identified and linked to other Robberies in Newark, New Jersey, and Charged with Five Counts of Robbery; and Three Weapons Offenses.
The ensuing investigation led to the Arrest of Earl Betterson, 33, of Irvington, New Jersey. Mr. Betterson was Charged with One Count of First Degree Murder; First Degree Felony Murder; First Degree Conspiracy to Commit Murder; Two Counts of Robbery; Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.
Mr. Betterson was also identified and linked to the same other Robberies in Newark and was additionally Charged with Five Counts of Robbery; and Three Weapons Offenses.
The Two men were Processed on the Charges and Remanded to The Essex County Correctional Facility pending Future Court Proceedings.
