NEWARK MAN CHARGED FOR FRIDAY MORNING'S FATAL STABBING

     " Michael Townsend, Jr. Charged With Murder & Weapons Offenses For The Stabbing Death Of Jabari A. Mason Inside A Parking Garage."

NEWARK, NJ.- Today, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II reported that a 31-Year-Old Newark, New Jersey man has been Arrested and Charged in connection with The Friday Morning Stabbing Death of a 31-Year-old Newark man inside a Mount Prospect Avenue Parking Garage.

    On Friday, March 10, 2023, at approximately 11:27 a.m., Members of The Newark Police Department responded to a Parking Garage located on The 400 Block of Mount Prospect Avenue in Newark, on a report of a Man Lying on the Ground.

     Upon arrival, Police Officers found an Unresponsive man, later identified as Jabari A. Mason, who had succumbed from Multiple Stab Wounds. Mr. Mason was subsequently pronounced deceased at 10:40 a.m. 

     The ensuing investigation by Members of The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force in conjunction with Detectives of The Newark Police Department were quickly able to identify Michael Townsend, 31, of Newark as a Suspect and the individual responsible for The Fatal Stabbing of Mr. Mason.

     On Sunday, March 12, 2023, Detectives were able to locate and Arrest Mr. Townsend in Newark. Mr. Townsend was Formally Charged with One Count of First Degree Murder; One Count of Third Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and Fourth Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.

     Mr. Townsend was Processed on The Charges and remanded to The Essex County Correctional Facility pending his First Appearance and a Detention Hearing in Essex County State Superior Court.
