Jersey City Man Additionally Charged

JERSEY CITY MAN WANTED IN CONNECTION WITH DEATH OF JERSEY CITY WOMAN ADDITIONALLY CHARGED

     " Leiner Miranda-Lopez First Charged With Desecrating Or Concealing Human Remains, Now Faces Murder Charges."

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- On Friday, March 10, 2023, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez reported that Additional Charges have been Filed Against a 26-Year-Old Jersey City man in connection with the Death of Luz Hernandez, 33, of Jersey City, New Jersey who was Found Deceased in Kearny, New Jersey on Tuesday, February 7, 2023. 



     Leiner Miranda-Lopez, 26, of Jersey City is Charged with First Degree Murder; Third Degree Hinder Apprehension; Third Degree Failing Dispose of Human Remains in a Manner Prescribed by Law; and Fourth Degree Tampering with Physical Evidence. Mr. Miranda-Lopez was Previously Charged with Second Degree Desecrating or Concealing Human Remains. 


     Mr. Miranda-Lopez has not yet been apprehended and remains on the run. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to Contact The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office at (201) 915-1345.


     On Monday, February 6, 2023, Luz Hernandez, a Jersey City Resident, and Beloved Kindergarten Teacher was reported missing to The Jersey City Police Department.  On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, a Welfare Check was conducted on Ms. Hernandez's Van Horne Street Home. During the Welfare Check, Police Officers found evidence of a Potential Crime and notified The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit, and an Investigation was Initiated.


     During the investigation, Detectives learned that Ceaser Santana and Leiner Miranda-Lopez were involved in a Motor Vehicle Stop on Sunday, February 5, 2023, in Kearny, New Jersey. The Vehicle was Unregistered and was Impounded by The Kearny Police Department. A Court Authorized Search Warrant was Executed on the vehicle on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, and Addition Evidence was uncovered.


     Further, The Kearny Police Department, knowing details of the traffic stop, led Detectives of The Hudson County Homicide Unit to Central Avenue and Third Street in Kearny, where investigators ultimately located what appeared to be a Shallow Grave. The Body of a Woman, later identified as Luz Hernandez, 33, of Jersey City was recovered a short time later, and Ms. Hernandez was pronounced deceased at the scene. 


     The Hudson County Regional Medical Examiner determined The Cause of Death to be Blunt Force Trauma to the Head and Compressions to the Neck and The Manner of Death to be Homicide.
