ELIZABETH NEW JERSEY MAN CONVICTED FOR THE JULY 27, 2019 BEATING DEATH OF A MAN

ELIZABETH, NJ.- On Tuesday, November 22, 2022, Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel announced that a Jury sitting in Union County, New Jersey has returned Guilty Verdicts against a man who Assaulted and Killed a 28-Year-Old Elizabeth, New Jersey man that occurred in July of 2019.
Laquan McCall, 31, of Elizabeth, New Jersey was found Guilty on Friday, November 18, 2022, on One Count of Second Degree Manslaughter and One Count of Second Degree Aggravated Assault. The Convictions are a result of a Two-Week Trial, in which the Jury deliberated for Three Days before reaching a unanimous decision of Guilty on the two charges.
On Saturday, July 27, 2019, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Members of The Elizabeth Police Department responded to Ben's Bar located on The 600 Block of Meadow Street in Elizabeth on a report of a Fight.
Upon arrival, Police Officers found a man, later identified as Oscar Melara, 28, of Elizabeth suffering from serious injuries. According to Union County Authorities, Mr. Melara was immediately transported to Trinitas Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, and was subsequently pronounced deceased a short time later.
A swift moving investigation by Members of The Union County Homicide Task Force and Detectives from The Elizabeth Police Department quickly determined that Mr. McCall had punched Mr. Melara numerous times which caused Mr. Melara to sustain serious brain trauma, which ultimately led to his Death. Mr. McCall was identified as the individual who struck Mr. Melara, and Mr. McCall was the individual responsible for his death.
Sentencing in this matter has been scheduled for January 27, 2023, in Union County State Superior Court, at which time Mr. McCall will face a potential of Ten Years in New Jersey State Prison. McCall will be Sentenced pursuant to The No Early Release Act that will require him to serve Eighty Five Percent of his sentence before coming eligible for parole.
