EAST ORANGE MAN CONVICTED OF ATTEMPTED MURDER IN A 2020 DOMESTIC DISPUTE

NEWARK, NJ.- On Thursday, November 17, 2022, Essex County Acting Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II announced that a Jury sitting in Essex County, New Jersey has returned Guilty Verdicts against an East Orange man, for the Attempted Murder of his Girlfriend during a November 8, 2020 Domestic Dispute that left his Ex Girlfriend hospitalized with serious injuries.
Following a month-long trial before The Honorable Marysol Rosero, J.S.C., Mr. Murrill was convicted Attempted Murder; Aggravated Assault; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and Unlaw Possession of a Weapon.
On November 8, 2020, Members of The East Orange Police Department responded to a residence on a report of a Domestic Dispute. Upon arrival, Police Officers learned that Mr. Murrill and his Ex-Girlfriend had ended their relationship, but continued to co-parent their children. The pair got into an argument inside of Mr. Murrill's apartment, and shots were fired. The two continued in the front of the apartment building, Murrill then entered his vehicle, jumped the curb and drove across the lawn, striking his ex-girlfriend while she was on the phone with the police, causing her to sustain serious injuries.
Murrill's ex-girlfriend was immediately transported to University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey for treatment.
Sentencing in the matter has been scheduled for February 6, 2023, at which time Mr. Murrill will face a maximum of 10 Years in New Jersey State Prison. Under the sentencing guidelines, Mr. Murrill will be required to serve Eighty-five percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
