SOUTH AFRICA.- A new coronavirus variant, B.1.1.529 or "Nu" has been detected in South Africa and Scientists and Researchers have voiced concerns that the variant has a really troubling combination of mutations that could possibly evade immunity.
Professor Tulio de Oliveira, Director of South Africa's Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation, said the new variant with 50 Mutations overall and more that 30 on the spike protein that affects transmissibility is spreading at a rapid pace and sees pressure in the healthcare system in the next few days and weeks.
Although it is too early to draw any conclusions, more studies are being conducted to understand the severity of the variant, the discovery of the variant is causing worry. The United Kingdom was quick to impose restrictions on travelers from six African Countries, effective Today, Friday, November 26, 2021, with similar restrictive measures being taken by multiple countries across Europe and Asia. Israel and Hong Kong have also reported cases of the variant, a sign it may already be elsewhere.
The World Health Organization has called a special meeting to discuss the variant. The Global Health Organization said it could be weeks before there are more answers around transmissibility and immune evasion.
