PATERSON, NJ.- On Monday, November 8, 2021 Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora announced that based upon an investigation by The Paterson Police Department, in conjunction with The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Alexi Dowell, 35, of Paterson, New Jersey, and Calbert Tate, Jr., 24, Paterson, New Jersey, were Arrested in connection to a Shooting investigation that took place Sunday, October 31, 2021, in the area of East 25th Street and 15th Avenue in Paterson, New Jersey.
Alexi Dowell has been Charged with First Degree Attempted Murder; Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun; and Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose. Calbert Tate, Jr. has been Charged with First Degree Attempted Murder; Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun; and Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.
On Sunday, October 31, 2021, at approximately 5:45 p.m., Members of The Paterson Police Department responded to the area of East 25th Street and 15th Avenue on a report of a shooting.
Upon arrival, Police Officers located a potential crime scene and a 35-Year-Old Paterson man, later identified as Alexi Dowell, who sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Mr. Dowell was immediately transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey for treatment.
The ensuing investigation determined that after a fight had erupted between several males in the area of East 25th Street and 15th Avenue, Mr. Dowell and Mr. Tate Fired Handguns at each other, resulting in Mr. Dowell being Struck by Gunfire.
Based on the investigation, Mr. Dowell and Mr. Tate, Jr. were identified as the Gunmen and Arrest Warrants were issued. On Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at approximately 1:40 p.m., Mr. Dowell reported to Paterson Police Headquarters, where he was taken into custody and Charged.
On Monday, November 8, 2021, at approximately 7:46 a.m., Mr. Tate, Jr. reported to Paterson Police Headquarters, where he was taken into custody and Charged.
If convicted on the Charges both Mr. Dowell and Mr. Tate will face a sentencing exposure for First Degree Attempted Murder is Ten to Twenty Years in New Jersey State Prison with Eighty-Five Percent term of service before parole eligibility pursuant to The No Early Release Act and Five Years parole supervision; on Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun it is Five to Ten Years in New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of Forty-Two Months before parole eligibility pursuant to The Graves Act; and on Second Degree Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose it is Five to Ten Years in New Jersey State Prison with Forty-Two Months of parole ineligibility pursuant to The Graves Act.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office has filed a motion for the Pretrial Detention of Alexi Dowell that will be heard November 9, 2021, before the Honorable Justine Niccollai, J.S.C. The State intends to file a motion for the pretrial detention of Calbert Tate which will be heard by a Superior Court Judge.
