A 21-YEAR-OLD PASSAIC, NEW JERSEY MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED AND CHARGED IN CONNECTION TO JULY 6, 2021 HOMICIDE

PASSAIC, NJ.- On Wednesday, July 7, 2021, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Passaic Police Chief Luis A. Guzman announced that based upon an investigation by The Passaic Police Department, in conjunction with The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office, Philip Sparrow, 21, has been arrested and charged on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 in connection to the homicide which occurred on the corner of Madison Street and Vreeland Avenue in Passaic, New Jersey.
Mr. Sparrow has been charged with First Degree Murder; Second Degree Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose; and Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun.
On Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at approximately 2:12 p.m., Members of The Passaic Police Department responded to the corner of Madison Street and Vreeland Avenue in Passaic, New Jersey, to a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, Police Officers located Amar Sultan, 18, of Passaic, New Jersey, lying under the Route 21 Overpass with apparent gunshot wounds. Mr. Sultan was immediately transported to Saint Mary's Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 4:45 p.m.
The subsequent investigation revealed that Mr. Sparrow was the individual responsible for the Murder of Mr. Sultan. Mr. Sparrow was arrested on July 6, 2021 at approximately 8:01 p.m. during a motor vehicle stop in the area of 91 Paulison Avenue in The City of Passaic.
The sentencing exposure for First Degree Murder is Thirty Years to Life in New Jersey State Prison, on Second Degree Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose and Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, on each charge is Five to Ten Years in New Jersey State Prison with a Mandatory Term of Service on each charge.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office will file a Motion for Pretrial Detention which will be heard in State Superior Court.
