NEWARK, NJ.- Residents and City Officials came together on Wednesday, for an afternoon of remembrance of a man whose life was tragically taken by hands of a former Minneapolis, Minnesota Police Officer.

A 700 Pound Bronze Statue was unveiled on Wednesday outside Newark's City Hall.

" Hopefully when people walk by and see it, and they participate, hopefully it inspires them to become active in the struggles that are happening right here in Newark, and right here in New Jersey," Newark's Mayor Ras Baraka said.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka along with Leon Pickney, who commissioned and donated the statue along with others, unveiled the statue. The unveiling of the statue comes just days before Juneteenth became a Federally recognized Holiday.

Sculptor Stanley Watts depicted George Floyd sitting on a bench and explained why he did it.

" The world needed a peaceful George," said Watts, according to NJ.com, " The world needed him relaxed and chilling on a bench and that's what we produced, and we produced him larger than life, because after death, George will be remembered. That's what memorials are. To remember and never forget why we changed today and tomorrow, and for the rest of our existence on this planet."

In May of 2020, a peaceful protest of over 12,000 people took place in Newark to protest against police brutality and Floyd's Death on May 25, 2020, which sparked months of intense demonstrations nationwide.

George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black Man, was killed on May 25, 2020, when Floyd was stopped police for allegedly trying to pass a counterfeit twenty dollar bill, at which time while Floyd was handcuffed and lying on the ground, former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chavin kneeled on Floyd's neck for over nine minutes, ignoring repeated pleas by Mr. Floyd that he was unable to breath. Floyd succumbed to injuries caused by Chavin.

Chavin was convicted of Second Degree Murder, Third Degree Murder, and Second Degree Manslaughter in April of this year, sentencing in the case is scheduled for the end of June.
