HUDSON COUNTY JAIL INMATE DIES IN APPARENT SUICIDE

KEARNY, NJ.- A man died Wednesday evening in a apparent suicide at The Hudson County Correctional & Rehabilitation Center in Kearny. County Officials reported that this was the first such death since 2018, at the facility.
Albert Roman, 51, died Wednesday evening of a apparently " self-inflicted injury," County Spokesman Jim Kennelly reported.
Medical attention was promptly rendered, and Mr. Roman was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injury, and was pronounced dead at around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday may 26th, Kennelly further reported.
Information on Roman's cause of death was not released.
Roman had been arrested by North Bergen Police back in November and charged with violating a restraining order, criminal mischief and contempt of court. He was in custody and was scheduled to be sentenced next week.
Hudson County Department of Corrections Director Ronald Edwards said, Roman's suicide was " unexpected," and reported Roman had not been on suicide watch.
During a five-year span, between the years of 2013 to 2018, the jail experienced an increased number of deaths, four of which were suicides.
In the wake of those deaths, county correctional officials canceled its contract with the jails health provider, and began a multimillion- dollar, renovation project at the facility, which involved the installation of anti-suicide measures in cells, bathrooms, and in common areas.
The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the death along with the State's Attorney General's Office.
