61-Year-Old Queens New York Man Charged With Sexually Assaulting A Preteen In The Past

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ.- Today, a 61-year-old Queens, New York man was taken into custody and charged with the alleged sexual assault of a preteen that occurred in the past in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey.
According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, on Tuesday, September 25, 2023, the New York City Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Special Victims Unit regarding a report of a sexual assault that had occurred in the past in Bergen County, New Jersey. Following receiving the report an investigation was launched.
Following an extensive and exhaustive investigation Detectives of the Bergen County Special Victims Unit and the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department were able to determine that based on interviews, including the victim, that Luis Zhagui, 61, of Queens, New York sexually assaulted a child under the age 13 years old at the time of the assault in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey.
Accordingly, on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, Zhagui was charged with second-degree Sexual Assault by Sexual Contact; and third-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Today, June 6, 2024, Detectives of the Bergen County Special Victims Unit with the assistance of the New York City Police Department were able to locate Zhagui and take him into custody in Queens, New York.
Following his arrest, Zhagui was detained by the New York Police Department pending extradition back to Bergen County, New Jersey to face trial on the charges.
