CAPE MAY COUNTY COURT HOUSE, NJ.- Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffery H. Sutherland reported, on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, Jonathan Howell, 42, of Marmora, New Jersey, a former Ocean City Beach Patrol member and a teacher in the Pleasantville School District appeared in Cape May County Superior Court and was sentenced by the Honorable J. Christopher Gibson, J.S.C. to a term of probation.
The sentence stems from an incident involving an April 2021 social media post that made numerous allegations against the Ocean City Beach Patrol. Since April 2021, the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office conducted a thorough investigation into the matter and concluded that the sentence was appropriate in accordance with the investigation.
Howell was indicted on January 21, 2023, on the charges of first-degree Aggravated Sexual Assault; second-degree Sexual Assault; second-degree Official Misconduct; and two counts of third-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
Howell later pled guilty to one count of second-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child and was sentenced last Tuesday to a term of 4 years of probation. The Judge further ordered that Howell must forfeit any future public employment.
Prosecutor Sutherland stated his office will continue to work hand in hand with the local municipalities to aggressively investigate and prosecute violent crimes within the County and he would like to recognize the investigative efforts of the officers and detectives involved in this investigation along with Senior Assistant Prosecutor Bryan Batten who prosecuted this case.
