WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ.- Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll reported that last Friday, a 66-year-old Washington Township, New Jersey man was sentenced to 8 years in New Jersey State Prison in connection with the distribution of child pornography over a peer-to-peer file-sharing network.

On January 26, 2024, John Green, 66, of Washington Township, New Jersey appeared before the Honorable Ralph Amirata, J.S.C., and pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material.

On Friday, May 31, 2024, Green appeared in Morris County Superior Court and was sentenced by Judge Amirata to a term of 8 years in prison on the guilty plea. Judge Amirata also ordered Green upon his release to register as a sex offender under Megan's Law Registration requirements, and parole supervision for life.

The charges stem from an investigation when Detectives determined that Green maintained a peer-to-peer file-sharing program that distributed child pornography. The investigation began when the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office Internet Crimes Against Children Unit identified possible child pornography on a BitTorrent site in Morris County. BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file-sharing network. Following receiving the information from the Hunterdon Court Prosecutor's Office, an investigation was launched by the Morris County Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force / Child Endangerment Unit, according to authorities.

During the investigation, Detectives found over 1000 digital images depicting the sexual exploitation or abuse of children. Detectives further determined that the BitTorrent file-sharing network was associated with Green's Washington Township residence, where he resided alone.

Following a court-authorized search warrant on the home, on June 2, 2023, Green was taken into custody and formally charged. Following a pretrial detention hearing a Judge ordered Green to be detained on the charge.
