According to Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll, on Friday, May 31, 2024, at around 10:30 p.m., members of the Roxbury Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a serious motor vehicle crash involving two vehicles on Howard Boulevard in Roxbury.
Upon arrival, Police Officers learned that a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado pickup traveling northbound on Howard Boulevard had collided head-on with a 2019 Mazda 3 that was traveling southbound on Howard Boulevard.
The driver of the Mazda 3, identified as Jacob Davis, 19, of Flanders, New Jersey, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, identified as Gerald Veneziano, 41, of Belleville, New Jersey, sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported to Morristown Medical Center for treatment.
During the initial investigation, Police Officers discovered numerous open alcohol containers in and around Mr. Veneziano's Silverado. Further investigation and analysis of the Silverado's ECM computer determined that Veneziano was traveling at 90 miles per hour when he struck the Mazda 3 and was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Accordingly, on Friday, June 21, 2024, Veneziano was formally charged with second-degree Reckless Vehicular Homicide and was issued multiple motor vehicle summonses. Veneziano was processed on the charge and was released from the Morris County Correctional Facility on non-monetary bail conditions pending future court proceedings in Morris County Superior Court in Morristown, New Jersey.
