30-YEAR-OLD NEWARK MAN CONVICTED OF MANSLAUGHTER AND WEAPONS OFFENSES

NEWARK, NJ.- On Thursday, February 22, 2024, a Jury sitting in Essex County, New Jersey, Convicted a 30-Year-Old Newark, New Jersey man on Charges in connection with The September 20, 2018, Fatal Shooting of his Cousin Shakill Springer, 24, of Newark, New Jersey.
According to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, on Thursday, February 22, 2024, The Jury Found Assalaam Garnes, 30, of Newark, New Jersey, on The Charges of Second Degree Manslaughter; Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon for Possessing The Murder Weapon on a Separate Date.
The Conviction stems from an incident when on September 20, 2018, Following a Verbal Altercation, Mr. Garnes pulled out a Firearm and Fatally Shot his Cousin, Shakill Springer, 24, of Newark outside his home. Garnes Fled the Scene and was later Apprehended on October 5, 2024, and was in Possession of The Murder Weapon.
Mr. Garnes has been Scheduled to be Sentenced on April 11, 2024, before The Honorable Verna G. Leath, Judge of Essex County Superior Court, at which time Garnes will Face up to Twenty Years in New Jersey State Prison.
"This was a senseless act of violence that took the life of a young man," said Assistant Prosecutor Jessica Yannette, who tried the case with Carlo Fioranelli, Supervising Assistant Prosecutor. "We only hope that this verdict brings some sense of justice and closure to the victim's family."
