Two Men Sentenced

TWO MEN SENTENCED TO STATE PRISON FOR THE BEATING DEATH OF AN ELIZABETH MAN IN 2019

     " Laquan McCall & Christopher Elliott Were Sentenced To Prison For The 2019 Beating Death Of Oscar Melara."

ELIZABETH, NJ.- Two Men, One who was Convicted at Trial, and another that Plead Guilty were Sentenced on Friday, March 10, 2023, to New Jersey State Prison for their roles in The Beating Death of Oscar Melara in 2019, Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel reported today.



     On Friday, March 10, 2023, Union County Superior Court Judge, The Honorable Candido Rodriguez, Jr. Sentenced Laquan McCall, 31, who was Convicted at Trial, last November of One Count of Second Degree Manslaughter. McCall was Sentenced to an Extended Term of 16 Years in Prison, due to his past Criminal History. McCall was Sentenced pursuant to The No Early Release Act which will require McCall to Serve 85% of his Custodial Term before becoming eligible for Parole.


     Judge Rodriguez also Friday Sentenced Christopher Elliott to Prison. Mr. Elliott, who had Plead Guilty in December to One Count of Third Degree Aggravated for being an Accomplice, to 3 Years in New Jersey State Prison.


     On Saturday, July 27, 2019, just shortly after 2:00 a.m., Members of The Elizabeth Police Department responded to a report of an Altercation at Ben's Bar located on The 600 Block of Meadow Street in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Upon arrival, Police Officers found a man, later identified as Oscar Melara, 28, who had sustained serious injuries.


     Mr. Melara was immediately transported to Trinitas Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, and was pronounced deceased. 


     Testimony at the Trial revealed that McCall Punched Mr. Melara in the Head Four Times, Ultimately Causing Severe Brain Injury, which led to Mr. Melara's Death.
