FREEHOLD, NJ.- In a betrayal of the standards for teacher conduct, On Monday, November 14, 2022, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced that on Saturday, November 12, 2022, an English Teacher at Red Bank Regional High School has been Arrested and Charged with having a Long Term Inappropriate Sexual Relationship with his former Student, starting when she was enrolled at the School.
Michael F. Canning, 41, of Red Bank, New Jersey stands Charged with Second Degree Sexual Assault; Second Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child; and Fourth Degree Criminal Sexual Contact.
The Arrest is a result of an investigation conducted by Members of The Monmouth County Special Victims Bureau in conjunction with The Red Bank Police Department, that determined that the alleged Criminal Conduct began in 2015, when the student was a Junior at the School and continued and extended into 2019, on numerous occassions during that time frame. It is alleged that Mr. Canning engaged in the Sexual Acts with the Girl at various locations in Red Bank, Little Silver, and Shrewsbury, New Jersey.
Mr. Canning was Arrested without incident in Oceanport, New Jersey. Canning was processed on the Charges and remanded to The Monmouth County Correctional Institution pending his First Appearance and Detention Hearing which will take place in Monmouth County State Superior Court in Freehold, New Jersey.
"These allegations constitute an egregious betrayal of the immense degree of faith we place upon teachers to always act in the best interests of young minds they are entrusted to develop and educate," Acting Prosecutor Santiago said. " The charges filed this weekend are emblematic of our firm commitment to ensure that such conduct is never tolerated, and always met with swift action."
