Union City Man Pleads Guilty

UNION CITY NEW JERSEY MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO CHARGE IN THE DEATH OF UNION CITY BICYCLIST ON NOVEMBER 16, 2020

     " Miguel Perez Of Union City Has Pleaded Guilty To Second Degree Leaving The Scene Of An Accident Resulting In Death."

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- On Friday, October 29, 2021 Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced on Thursday, October 28, 2021, Miguel Perez, 29, of Union City, New Jersey Pleaded Guilty to Charges in State Superior Court related to his involvement in the November 16, 2020 death of cyclist, Marcelino Pico, 56, of Union City who was struck and killed while bicycling on Bergenline Avenue in Union City.



     Mr. Perez Pleaded Guilty to One Count of Second Degree Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death;  and the Associated Motor Vehicle Summons. 


     The State at the time of sentencing will recommend a sentence of Seven Years in New Jersey State Prison along with a Consecutive Two Year Driver’s License Suspension. The plea allocution was heard and  accepted by The Honorable Judge Angelo Servidio, J.S.C., sitting in Hudson County Superior Court. Sentencing in the case has been scheduled for January 5, 2021.


     On November 16, 2020, at approximately 7:45 p.m., Members of The Union City Police Department responded to the area of 48th Street near Bergenline Avenue on reports of a cyclist struck with serious injuries. 


     Upon arrival, Police Officers located a victim, later identified as Marcelino Pilco, of Union City, suffering from serious injuries. Mr. Pico was immediately transported to The Jersey City Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, and was pronounced deceased at 11:48 p.m.


     According to the initial investigation, the victim was cycling northbound on Bergenline Avenue when he was struck by a White Nissan Rogue, after striking Mr. Pico the driver fled the scene eastbound on 48th Street.
