Hillsborough Police Involved Fatal Shooting

NEW JERSEY ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE INVESTIGATES FATAL POLICE SHOOTING IN HILLSBOROUGH, NEW JERSEY

     " The September 28, 2021 Fatal Police Involved Shooting Death Of Distraught Hillsborough New Jersey Resident Patrick Chin Is Under Investigation."

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ.- On Monday, October 18, 2021 Acting New Jersey Attorney General Andrew J. Bruck announced that The New Jersey Attorney General's Office is conducting an investigation into the September 28, 2021 Hillsborough Township Police Involved Fatal Shooting of Patrick Chin, 43, inside of his Piedmont Path residence.



     On Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at approximately 4:10 p.m., Five Uniformed Members of The Hillsborough Township Police Department responded to a residence on Piedmont Path on a report to conduct a Welfare Check on Patrick Chin a resident of the home.


     Upon arrival, Police Officer George Kokinakous, Police Officer Robert Feriello, Police Officer Thomas Gurba, Police Officer Kyle Edmonds, and Police Officer Dylan Ely encountered Mr. Chin inside the residence holding an approximately Three Foot Metal Sword.


     During the encounter, Officer Feriello deployed Pepper Spray against Mr. Chin, and then Officer Kokinakous Fired his Service Weapon Fatally Wounding Mr Chin. Police Officers and Emergency Service Personnel rendered Medical Attention. Mr. Chin was immediately transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased at 5:28 p.m. 


     Mr. Chin had recently purchased his Piedmont Path residence in 2021, and had married in June of 2021. Mr. Chin was currently employed as an IT Business Partner at Bristol Myers Squibb.


     The investigation is being conduct pursuant to Attorney General's Directive 2019-4, which implements the statutory requirements that The Attorney General's Office conduct the investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a Law Enforcement Officer acting in the Officer's capacity or while the decedent is in custody, and which establishes clear standards and procedures for conducting such investigations.
