PATERSON, NJ.- On Wednesday, October 6, 2021 Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora announce that based upon an investigation by The Paterson Police Department, in conjunction with The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Jamar Ray, 20, of Paterson, New Jersey, was Arrested in connection to a shooting investigation that took place September 5, 2021, in the area of Mercer and Warren Streets in Paterson, New Jersey.
Jamar Ray has been Charged with First Degree Attempted Murder; Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Second Degree; and Second Degree Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose.
On Sunday, September 5, 2021, at approximately 9:53 p.m. Members of The Paterson Police Department responded to the area of Mercer and Warren Streets in Paterson, New Jersey on a report of shots fired.
Upon arrival, Police Officers located a potential crime scene but were unable to locate a victim. A short time later, Police were notified that a 16-year-old juvenile arrived at Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey by way of private vehicle seeking treatment for multiple non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
The ensuing investigation determined that the victim was with a group in the area of Mercer and Warren Streets when one of the individuals began shooting, striking the victim several times.
Based on the investigation, Jamar Ray was identified as the shooter and a warrant was issued for his arrest. On Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at approximately 11:44 a.m., Members of The Paterson Police Department arrested Jamar Ray in the area of Keen Street and Rosa Parks Boulevard in Paterson, New Jersey.
If convicted, the sentencing exposure for Mr. Ray on First Degree Attempted Murder is Ten to Twenty Years in New Jersey State Prison with 85% term of service before parole eligibility pursuant to The No Early Release Act and Five Years Parole Supervision; on each of the Counts of Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun; and Second Degree Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose it is Five to Ten Years in New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of Forty Two Months to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to The Graves Act.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office will be filing a motion in Passaic County Superior Court to have Mr. Ray detained, pending the resolution of the Charges filed against him.
