HILLSIDE, NJ.- On Wednesday, August 11, 2021 Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel and Hillside Police Chief Vincent Ricciardi announced a Newark, New Jersey resident was arrested Wednesday morning at Newark Liberty Airport in connection with the July 22, 2021 Shooting Death of Steven Zimmerman, 31, of Hillside, New Jersey.
Darrius L. Easterling has been Charged with First Degree Murder; Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose; and Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.
On Thursday, July 22, 2021, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Members of The Hillside Police Department responded to the 1400 Block of North Broad Street in Hillside, New Jersey on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, Police Officers found Mr. Zimmerman who had sustained a serious gunshot wound. Mr. Zimmerman succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased.
The ensuing investigation led by The Union County Homicide Task Force in conjunction with The Hillside Police Department and assisted by The Union County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit, The Union County Police Department Ballistics Unit, The Port Authority Police Department and The Department of Homeland Security Investigations determined that Mr. Easterling was responsible for the shooting death of Mr. Zimmerman.
" We are grateful for the collaboration of Local and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies who assisted our Office in locating and apprehending the suspect," Prosecutor Daniel said. " And we hope this arrest can bring some small measure of comfort, for all those grieving Mr. Zimmerman."
If Convicted Mr. Easterling will be subject to Life in New Jersey State Prison.
