PATERSON, NJ.- On Friday, August 13, 2021 Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora announced that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department, in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Samuel Anthony, 22, of Paterson, New Jersey, has been taken into custody in relation to a shooting investigation that took place on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, in the area of Hamilton Avenue and Summer Street in Paterson, New Jersey.
Samuel Anthony is charged with First Degree Robbery; Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun; Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; Second Degree Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons; and Fourth Degree Aggravated Assault.
On Wednesday, August 4, 2021, Members of The Paterson Police Department were notified that a 21-year-old male Paterson, New Jersey resident arrived at Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey by way of private vehicle for treatment of a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
Based upon the investigation, it was determined that at approximately 4:59 p.m. on Wednesday, in the area of Hamilton Avenue and Summer Street, a gunman approached an individual and brandished a firearm during the commission of a robbery. The handgun discharged during an ensuing struggle, striking the victim who was a bystander. The defendant was identified as the gunman and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Thursday, August 12, 2021, at approximately 9:00 a.m., Members of the Paterson Police Department arrested Samuel Anthony in the area of Prospect Street and Passaic Avenue in Passaic, New Jersey.
The sentencing exposure for Samuel Anthony, if convicted, on First Degree Robbery is Ten to Twenty Years New Jersey State Prison with 85% term of service before parole eligibility pursuant to The No Early Release Act and 5 Years Parole Supervision; on Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun it is Five to Ten Years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 42 Months before parole eligibility pursuant to The Graves Act; on Second Degree Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose it is Five to Ten Years New Jersey State Prison with 42 months of parole ineligibility pursuant to The Graves Act; on Second Degree Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons it is Five to Twenty Years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of Five Years before parole eligibility; and on Fourth Degree Aggravated Assault it is Eighteen Months New Jersey State Prison.
The State has filed a motion for pretrial detention that will be heard Wednesday, August 18, 2021 before the Honorable Joseph Portelli, J.S.C.
