WASHINGTON- U.S. President Joe Biden forcefully reiterated his commitment to Israel's security on Friday, a day after a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas went into effect.
Biden insisted there has been " no shift " in U.S. support of Israel's security as Progressive Democrats call for a firmer stance in response to Israel's mistreatment and killing of Palestinians.
During a news conference with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Biden was asked by a reporter whether he recognized " a shift in evolution in your party" on the issue of Israel and the Palestinian people.
" There is no shift in my commitment to the security of Israel, period. No shift, not at all," stated Biden, who added that calling for a " two-state solution " was the " only answer."
Biden further said he had spoken with with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and had said that the U.S. would " provide for security" in the region.
The President said he would "attempt to put together" a package of support with other nations to rebuild homes in Gaza destroyed by Israeli airstrikes, "without providing Hamas the ability to rebuilt their weapons systems," adding that civilians in Gaza " need help."
" I think my party still supports Israel," the President said, " let's get something straight here. Until the region says unequivocally they acknowledge the right to Israel to exist as an Independent Jewish State, there will be no peace."
Throughout the eleven-day conflict Progressive Democrats called on President Biden to denounce and condemn, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for airstrikes against the Palestinian people, disproportionately killed, than Israeli casualties.
Senator Bernie Sanders I-Vt. introduced a legislative resolution that if passed, would block the pending sale of $735 million in arms to Israel.
The resolution is emblematic of the rift among Democrats about how much pressure was to be used against Israel over the conflict- and the willingness of the Progressive left-wing lawmakers, to challenge The Biden administration.
" At a moment when U.S.-made bombs are devastating Gaza, and killing women and children, we cannot simply let another huge arms sale go through without even a Congressional debate," Sanders said in a statement on Thursday.
With the ceasefire holding, and now in its second day, maybe the Progressive wing of Democrats, can start addressing the issues that they have created in our country.
