BERLIN BOROUGH, NJ.- A former New Jersey paramedic and emergency medical technician has been sentenced to five years in state prison after pleading guilty to distributing child sexual abuse material, according to Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay.
Jeremy Algarin, 31, of Berlin Borough, New Jersey, received the sentence in Superior Court on Friday, October 2, 2026, following his June guilty plea. In addition to imprisonment, Algarin must register as a sex offender under Megan's Law and will be subject to parole supervision for life.
Guilty Plea Leads To Five-Year Prison Sentence;
Algarin pleaded guilty on June 22, 2026, to one count of second-degree Distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Material, commonly referred to as CSAM. His sentencing concluded the criminal prosecution stemming from a cyber tip received by investigators in 2025.
The prison term carries consequences extending beyond Algarin's incarceration because of the Megan's Law registration and lifetime parole supervision requirements imposed in the case. Those measures will continue to apply following his eventual release from state prison.
Cyber Tip Leads Detectives To Discord Account;
The investigation began after a cyber tip directed Detectives to a Discord account that authorities determined had been used to possess and distribute digital images and video files depicting the sexual exploitation and abuse of children. Investigators subsequently identified Algarin as the person using the account.
Detectives expanded their investigation to Algarin's electronic devices, including his cellphone. A forensic examination uncovered additional CSAM, with Investigators ultimately locating more than 1,000 images and videos across multiple electronic devices.
Algarin Arrested In Berlin Borough;
Authorities charged and arrested Algarin in Berlin Borough on August 6, 2025. Authorities remanded him to the Camden County Correctional Facility after his arrest.
At the time of his arrest, Algarin was employed as both a paramedic and emergency medical technician. The State of New Jersey subsequently revoked his paramedic and EMT license.
High Tech Crimes Unit Conducted Investigation;
Detective James Cavanaugh of the Camden County Prosecutor's Office High Tech Crimes Unit conducted the investigation that resulted in Algarin's prosecution. The case involved digital forensic work that allowed investigators to connect the online account and electronic evidence to the defendant.
The State was represented by Section Chief Sonja Furlow of the High Tech Crimes Unit. Algarin's guilty plea eliminated the need for a trial and led to the five-year state-prison sentence imposed last week.
