WASHINGTON, DC.- The Metropolitan Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a second suspect connected to an unarmed carjacking that occurred Monday evening in Northwest Washington, D.C., according to authorities.

Investigators say the incident unfolded on Monday, May 18, 2026, at approximately 8:07 p.m. in the 1900 block of 9th Street Northwest, an area located within the District’s Shaw neighborhood. Police reported that two suspects approached a man who was seated on his moped when the confrontation began.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, one of the suspects physically assaulted the victim while the second suspect allegedly fled the scene on the victim’s stolen moped, taking the victim’s personal property in the process. Authorities classified the incident as an unarmed carjacking due to the forcible theft of the motor vehicle during the assault.

Officials stated that members of the National Guard who were present in the vicinity intervened during the altercation and detained one of the suspects until MPD officers arrived at the scene. The intervention by National Guard personnel prevented the suspect from fleeing prior to police arrival, authorities said.

Police identified the arrested suspect as 34-year-old Deangelo Williams of Northwest Washington, D.C. Williams was subsequently taken into custody and charged with Unarmed Carjacking.

The identity of the second suspect has not yet been released, and investigators continue working to determine the suspect’s whereabouts. Authorities have not publicly disclosed whether the stolen moped has been recovered or whether additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation progresses.

The Metropolitan Police Department emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing. Detectives are urging anyone with information related to the incident, including possible surveillance footage or eyewitness accounts, to contact investigators immediately.

Anyone with information regarding the carjacking is asked to contact police at (202) 727-9099 or submit anonymous tips through the Department’s TEXT TIP LINE by texting 50411. Officials noted that the Metropolitan Police Department currently offers rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of individuals responsible for crimes committed within the District of Columbia.

The incident highlights continued concerns surrounding violent thefts and vehicle-related robberies across portions of the nation’s capital, where law enforcement agencies have continued increasing patrols and public safety operations in high-traffic corridors and nightlife districts. Authorities have not indicated whether the suspects may be connected to other recent robbery or carjacking incidents in the area.

Editor’s Note:

This remains a developing investigation. All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. Englebrook Independent News will continue monitoring updates released by the Metropolitan Police Department regarding the identification and possible apprehension of the outstanding suspect.
