VINELAND, NJ.- On Friday, June 7, 2024, Jana S. Denby, 27, of Vineland, New Jersey, appeared in Cumberland County Superior Court and was sentenced by the Honorable Cristen P. D'Arrigo, J.S.C. to a 5-year term in New Jersey State Prison on the charge of second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. Judge D'Arrigo ordered that Denby be required to serve 1-year of his custodial sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
The sentence stems from an incident that began at a home on Arcadia Place in Vineland, New Jersey. An individual in the residence called the Vineland Police Department and advised Police Officers that Denby had just left the residence and was in possession of a handgun.
Members of the Vineland Police Department responded, and shortly thereafter, a Vineland Police Patrol Unit conducted a motor vehicle stop on a vehicle being driven by Denby's grandmother. Denby was seated in the front passenger's seat while a 12-year-old child was seated in the back of the vehicle.
Police Officers observed that the child was in possession of a loaded handgun. During questioning the child told Police Officers that as Police Officers were attempting to stop the vehicle, Denby gave the child the handgun and told him to put it in his pants. During the ensuing investigation, Police Officers determined that Denby did not have a permit to possess a handgun.
Following the investigation, Denby was taken into custody and formally charged.
