39-Year-Old Egg Harbor Township Man Charged Hitting A Bicyclist And Leaving Him To Die In Roadway

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, NJ.- A 39-year-old Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey man was taken into custody and formally charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred in Egg Harbor Township on February 6, 2024, that left a 69-year-old bicyclist dead.
According to Atlantic County Prosecutor William E. Reynolds, following an investigation Shawn P. Duffy, 39, of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey was formally charged with second-degree Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash; and second-degree Vehicular Homicide.
The charges stem from an investigation that began, when on February 6, 2024, when shortly after 6:30 p.m., members of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department responded to Steelmanville Road in the Township after receiving a report that an individual had been struck by a motor vehicle.
Upon arrival, Police Officers located a man, later identified as Neil G. Burman, 68, of Egg Harbor Township who had been struck by a motor vehicle while riding his bike. Mr. Burman had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The motor vehicle that struck Mr. Burman fled the scene.
The ensuing investigation by Detectives of the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Crash Investigation Unit and the Egg Harbor Township Police Department were able to identify Duffy who struck Mr. Burman while driving under the influence of alcohol and then fled the scene.
"The rules of the court requires us to include a statement, that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt."
