LAKEWOOD TOWNSHIP, NJ.- Ocean County Authorities have determined that an early Saturday morning house fire located on Joe Parker Road in Lakewood Township that left a resident of the home in critical condition and two first responders injured originated underneath a screened-in deck and was ruled accidental due to discarded smoking material.

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, on Saturday, May 4, 2024, shortly before 1:30 a.m., members of the Lakewood Township Police Department and the Lakewood Township Fire Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a structure fire located on a Joe Parker Road residence.

Upon arrival, First Responders found heavy fire coming from the front and back of the home. Residents of the home informed emergency personnel that a male occupant of the home was still inside the burning home. The missing occupant was located in the house and was rescued by a Lakewood Township Police Officer.

The man was immediately transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey for treatment where he remains in critical but stable condition.

The Police Officer who rescued the man was transported to Monmouth Medical Center-Southern Campus in Lakewood where he was treated for minor injuries and released. While fighting the fire, a Lakewood Fireman suffered a cardiac event and was transported to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick Township, where he was treated and released.

A swift-moving investigation by Ocean County Authorities determined that the fire was accidentally set by discarded cigarettes that were discarded underneath a screened-in deck that was attached to the house.
