According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, following a swift-moving investigation by Detectives of the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office and the Paterson Police Department, on Friday, Jimmy Mercedes, 39, of Paterson surrendered himself to the Paterson Police and was formally charged with first-degree Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and second-degree Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons.

The charges stem from an investigation that unfolded when on Sunday, May 5, 2024, shortly before 10:30 a.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a shooting in the area of Broadway and East 24th Street in the City of Paterson.

Mr. Robinson was immediately transported to Saint Joseph's University Medical Center where he remained hospitalized until Tuesday, May 7, 2024, when he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The subsequent investigation by Passaic County Authorities was able to quickly identify Mr. Mercedes, a convicted felon as the suspect and the individual responsible for the shooting death of Mr. Robinson.

After being processed on the charges Mr. Mercedes was remanded pending future court proceedings in Passaic County Superior Court in Paterson, New Jersey. The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office has filed a pretrial detention motion to have Mr. Mercedes detained pending the resolution of the charges filed against him.
