43-YEAR-OLD WHARTON MAN SENTENCED TO STATE PRISON FOR THE SEXUAL ASSAULT OF TEEN GIRL

PROSPECT PARK, NJ.- A 43-Year-Old Wharton, New Jersey man, who was Employed as a Lyft Ride-Share Driver was Sentenced to New Jersey State Prison for Sexually Assaulting a Teen Girl back in 2019.
According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, on Friday, February 9, 2024, Julio Mejia, 43, of Wharton, New Jersey, was Sentenced to Seven Years in New Jersey State Prison by Passaic County Superior Court Judge Joseph A. Portelli. Mr. Mejia was previously convicted after a Jury Found him Guilty on September 20, 2023, of Second Degree Sexual Assault; Third Degree of Endangering the Welfare of a Child; and Fourth Degree of Criminal Sexual Contact.
The Conviction and Sentence stem from an incident when on November 19, 2019, The Prospect Park Police Department received a report that a Juvenile Girl had been Sexually Assaulted by a Ride-Share Driver, who was later identified as Julio Mejia.
Following a Swift-Moving Investigation by Members of The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office Special Victims Unit and The Prospect Police Department. During the investigation, Detectives interviewed multiple witnesses including the Child Victim. As a result of The Investigation Detectives determined that Mr. Mejia and the Teen engaged in Sexual Intercourse after she took a Lyft Ride on August 30, 2019, and following that they continued to communicate over the next several weeks. At that time, the two engaged in Sexual Activity again.
At the time of his arrest, Mr. Mejia was an active member of The United States Armed Services.
In addition to the Seven Year Prison Sentence, Judge Portelli also ordered that Mejia will be required to Register as a Sex Offender pursuant to Megan's Law Requirements and will be Subject to Parole Supervision for Life.
