BREAKING: Newark, New Jersey Man Sentenced To Prison For Fatal Crash

GARBAGE TRUCK DRIVER SENTENCED FOR THE MAY 2023 FATAL ROUTE 23 PEQUANNOCK NEW JERSEY CRASH

     " Angel Caraballo-Maldona Was Sentenced Last Friday To 4 Years In State Prison For Recklessly Causing The Death Of An Individual."

MORRISTOWN, NJ.- Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll reported that on Friday, October 27, 2023, The Honorable Ralph E. Amirata, J.S.C. Sentenced Angel Caraballo-Maldona, 45, of Newark, New Jersey was Sentenced to New Jersey State Prison in connection with a Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash that occurred in Pequannock Township on May 8, 2023.


     On Friday, during a hearing in Morris County Superior Court, Judge Amirata Sentenced Mr. Caraballo-Maldona to a Term of Four Years in State Prison. The Sentence is Subject to The No Early Release Act, which will Require Caraballo-Maldona to Serve Eight-Five Percent of his Custodial Sentence before becoming Eligible for Parole. Caraballo-Maldona had previously Entered a Guilty Plea before Judge Amirata on August 29, 2023.


     The Guilty Plea and Sentence stem from a Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash. On May 8, 2023, at approximately 5:18 a.m., Members of The Pequannock Township Police Department responded to a Serious Motor Vehicle Crash at the intersection of Route 23 North and Alexander Avenue in Pequannock Township, New Jersey.


     Upon arrival, Police Officers discovered that a 2020 Chevy Traverse had been Struck from behind by a Garbage Truck while the Traverse was Stopped at a Red Light. Upon impact with the Garbage Truck the Chevy Traverse Burst into Flames. The Unresponsive Driver of the Traverse was pulled from the vehicle by the Driver of the Garbage Truck and a Bystander. Despite Life-Saving Measures by Police Officers and Emergency Medical Personnel, the Driver of the Traverse succumbed to injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.


     During the ensuing investigation, Video Surveillance revealed that Caraballo-Maldona was using his Cell Phone at the time of the collision. Accordingly, Caraballo-Maldona was Charged with Second Degree Reckless Vehicular Homicide, shortly after the Crash.
