NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ.- Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone reported that on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, The Honorable Benjamin S. Bucca, Jr., J.S.C. Sentenced Yokauri Batista-Alcantara to 11-Years in New Jersey State Prison for a Wrong-Way Fatal Crash that occurred on Thanksgiving Night in 2021, that Killed Two Children and Injured Three.

On Thursday, November 21, 2023, at 11:53 p.m., Members of The North Brunswick Police Department responded to The Southbound Lane of Route 130 near The On-Ramp to Route 1 in North Brunswick Township on a report of a Serious Motor Vehicle Crash involving an Old Bridge Police Vehicle and a Honda Accord.

Upon arrival, Police Officers located Ms. Batista-Alcantara, 33, of New Brunswick, New Jersey, and Two Children injured inside the Honda Accord. Batista-Alcantara and the Two Children were immediately transported to an area Hospital, where the Children succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased.

The ensuing investigation by Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Detective Jonathan Berman quickly determined that Two Old Bridge Police Officers were transporting an In-Custody Passenger to The Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick Township when Ms. Batista-Alcantara drove the Wrong-Way down the On-Ramp and Struck the Police Vehicle. The investigation further determined that Batista-Alcantara was under the Influence of Alcohol and was using her Cell Phone at the time of The Collision.

Ms. Batista-Alcantara subsequently Pleaded Guilty to Two Counts of Second Degree Vehicular Homicide for the Deaths of the Two Children; and Three Counts of Third Degree Assault-by-Auto for the Serious Injuries the Three Occupants in the Police Vehicle sustained in the Crash, as well as One Count of Driving While Intoxicated. In return for the Guilty Plea, The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office recommended a 20-Year State Prison Sentence subject to The No Early Release Act.

During Wednesday's Sentencing Hearing, Judge Bucca, Jr. Sentenced Batista-Alcantara to Two Six Year Prison Sentences on each Vehicular Homicide Charge for the Deaths of The Children, The Two Sentences will be Served Concurrently, and a Consecutive Five Year Sentence for the Three Counts of Assault-by-Auto for a Total of 11-Years in State Prison. Batista-Alcantara will be required to Serve Eighty-Five Percent of her Custodial Sentence before becoming eligible for Parole. Batista-Alcantara Permanently Forfeited her Nursing Licence and will have her Driver's License Suspended for Five-Years upon release from Prison. She will also be required to complete Three-Years of Parole Supervision.
