NEWARK, NJ.- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II reported that a Newark Police Officer Anthony Gibson was Convicted yesterday on Official Misconduct and Theft at the conclusion of a Trial before The Honorable Patrick J. Arre, J.S.C.

Following an investigation by The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Professional Standards Bureau, which investigates Criminal Allegations against Police Officers. Detectives of The Professional Standards Bureau determined that Officer Gibson took a Sick Leave from The Newark Police Department, Patrol Division beginning March 6, 2018, through November 2, 2018. During that time period Officer Gibson received his Full Pay and Benefits from The City of Newark.

While on Sick Leave, Officer Gibson worked a private security job at a local hospital on 32 Days between March 20, 2018 and September 22, 2018. On 31 of those days, Officer Gibson worked at the hospital the same hours that he was Scheduled to work for The Newark Police Department.

Gibson was paid more than $46,000 from The City of Newark, and collected $4,700 from the hospital for his Security Duties. After Gibson's Action was confirmed, Officer Gibson was Suspended from The Newark Police Department Without Pay in November or 2018. Criminal Charges were Filed at a Later Date.

Officer Gibson is Scheduled to be Sentenced on the Charges on April 28, 2023, in Essex County State Superior Court. On The Official Misconduct Charge Gibson will face a Mandatory Five Years in New Jersey State Prison. Further, following The Verdict Gibson was remanded to The Essex County Correctional Facility.

Additionally, Mr. Gibson has Two Open Indictments, which include Charges of Distribution of Controlled Dangerous Substances, Conspiracy, and Official Misconduct. Gibson has Pleaded Not Guilty to those Charges.

After Wednesday's Verdict, Assistant Prosecutor George Gay, who tried the case, said, " The conduct that was proved in a fair and open trial was egregious and far below the high standards we demand of Police Officers. The people of Essex County should feel assured that there is one standard of justice and that their Prosecutor's Office will not tolerate public officials who put their personal gain ahead of their duty to the public."
