PASSAIC COUNTY AUTHORITIES MAKES ARREST IN CONNECTION WITH THE FEBRUARY 4, 2022 PATERSON HOMICIDE

PATERSON, NJ.- On Monday, February 7, 2022 Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora announced that based upon an investigation by The Paterson Police Department, in conjunction with The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Jaquawn Housey, 33, of Paterson, New Jersey was Arrested on February 7, 2022 in connection to The Homicide which occurred on Friday, February 4, 2022 at 285 Van Houten Street in Paterson, New Jersey.
Mr. Housey has been Charged with First Degree Murder; Second Degree Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose; and Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun.
On Friday, February 4, 2022, at approximately 11:20 p.m., Members of The Paterson Police Department responded to the area of 285 Van Houten Street in Paterson, New Jersey on a report of Shots Fired. Upon arrival, Police Officers found Rodney Phelps, 39, of Washington Township, New Jersey lying on the roadway in front of that address with apparent Gunshot Wounds. Mr. Phelps had succumbed to his injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased on scene.
The ensuing investigation determined that Mr. Housey was responsible for the Murder of Mr. Phelps. Mr. Housey was Arrested on Monday, February 7, 2022, at approximately 11:05 a.m. by Members of The Paterson Police Department and The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office at his residence in Paterson, New Jersey without incident.
If Convicted, Mr. Housey will be subject for the Crime of Murder of a Minimum of Thirty Years up to Life Imprisonment; for the Crimes of Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, and Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, both have a Sentencing Range of Five to Ten Years in Prison with Forty Two Months to be served before Parole Eligibility.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office has Filed a Motion to have Mr. Housey detained pending Trial that will be heard by a Superior Court Judge.
