FREEHOLD, NJ.- On Monday, October 25, 2021 Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey announced a Wall Township, New Jersey man has been Arrested and Charged with swindling his former business partner out of approximately $1.57 Million.
Anthony Steward, 54, of Wall, New Jersey has been Charged with Second Degree Misconduct by Corporate Official and Second Degree Theft by Deception.
The Charges filed were the result of an investigation by Members of The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office that began in May, when the victim reported the Thefts. The Thefts which took place in three separate incidents beginning in October 2019 and culminated in July 2021. In each instance, Mr. Steward would convince the victim to make payments in the hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans and investments, through which he purportedly purchase or renovated properties in New York and New Jersey.
Mr. Steward would allegedly tell the victim that the funds were being used on one investment project, only to divert part of the cash toward another, without the victim's knowledge or consent. Steward also allegedly used some of the stolen funds to pay personal credit card bills. On one occasion, the investigation revealed, Mr. Steward convinced the victim to invest $280,000. in purchasing a property despite the owner of the property agreeing to sell.
Mr. Steward surrendered to authorities without incident on Friday, October 22, 2021. Steward was processed on the Charges and released on a summons pending the adjudication of the offenses in Monmouth County Superior Court.
