MAN CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH THE APRIL 12, 2021 ATTEMPTED AGGRAVATED ARSON OF FORMER WIFE'S VEHICLE

MOUNT ARLINGTON, NJ.- On Friday, September 10, 2021 Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll, Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives Christoph Kimker, and Mount Arlington Chief of Police Edward LaBruno announced the arrest of Devin Markowitz, 53, of Mount Arlington, New Jersey on charges related to an Attempted Aggravated Arson that occurred on April 12, 2021.
On April 13, 2021 law enforcement was alerted to a suspicious incident that occurred at the Lake Shore Village Clubhouse, Mount Arlington, New Jersey.
The investigation revealed an individual had inserted a fuse into the gas tank of a pick-up truck with a cigarette attached to the end. The fuse failed to ignite and the cigarette had burned out prior to any ignition. The investigation revealed video of a suspect approaching the area of the vehicle on April 12, 2021, at approximately 8:29 p.m., and running away from the area approximately five minutes later.
Scientific DNA testing revealed that the cigarette was connected to Devin Markowitz. Markowitz was previously married to the truck owner’s girlfriend. Markowitz was charged with Second Degree Attempted Aggravated Arson; Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose (a destructive device); and Third Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (a destructive device).
Markowitz was previously charged in connection with this investigation on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 with Two Counts of Second Degree Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons, when Mr. Markowitz was found to be in possession of two guns he was not lawfully permitted to possess.
In accordance with the Criminal Justice Reform Act, Markowitz has been remanded to the Morris County Correctional Facility pending future court proceedings.
